Es gab keine Anästhetika, bis Dr. John Snow Ether (d.h. Chloroform) Victoria während der Geburt von Prinz Leopold und Prinzessin Beatrice verabreichte. Leopold wurde am 7. April 1853 im Buckingham Palace in London geboren. Während der Wehen entschied sich Königin Victoria, Chloroform zu verwenden und genehmigte somit die Anwendung von Anästhesie bei der Geburt, die kürzlich von Professor James Young Simpson entwickelt worden war. Königin Victoria selbst nannte es "das selige Chloroform" und dessen Wirkung "beruhigend, stillend und über alle Maßen erfreulich". Einige religiöse Führer und Ärzte lehnten die Verwendung ab und argumentierten, dass Gott beabsichtigt hatte, dass die Geburt schwierig sein sollte: (Genesis 3,16) "Ich werde deine Schmerzen bei der Geburt sehr stark machen."
