Buren is a city with a rich history and many attractions. The city of Buren received city rights in 1395. The fortifications of Buren are still largely intact. There are still ramparts, walls and one city gate. Buren can call itself Oranjestad, because of the connection with the royal family. William of Orange married Anna van Egmont, Countess van Buren, in 1551. King Willem-Alexander is therefore Count van Buren.
In Buren stood one of the largest castles in the Netherlands: Huis Buren. The castle was sold by the government for demolition in 1804. With the stones sold, houses were restored and completely new houses were built. These houses are now often called 'castle houses' in Buren.
