El paso de San Bernardino conecta Mesocco, de habla italiana, con Splügen, de habla alemana, y se encuentra en la divisoria de aguas entre la cuenca del Po al sur y la del Rin al norte. La altura del paso es de 2.065 m y la longitud del paso es de 33 km. La ruta ofrece vistas impresionantes del típico paisaje suizo: pequeños lagos de montaña, cascadas y enormes bosques de abetos.
