El edificio de la dirección de Essen fue construido para la Dirección de Ferrocarriles Real de Essen, fundada en 1895. En 1922 se convirtió en la Dirección de Ferrocarriles del Reich de Essen. Después de ser parcialmente destruido en la Segunda Guerra Mundial y de un considerable cambio en su reconstrucción, el edificio fue entre 1951 y la reforma ferroviaria de 1994 la sede de la Dirección Federal de Ferrocarriles de Essen. Posteriormente, el notable edificio, que no está bajo protección de monumentos, estuvo vacío durante algunos años. Desde octubre de 2010 alberga un centro de servicios de Deutsche Bank.
