La Papenkaule es el cráter seco que una explosión freática creó hace aproximadamente 10.000 años en el dolomita de Munterley, que pertenece a la cuenca de caliza de Gerolstein, al norte de Gerolstein/Eifel.
Sin embargo, la lava liberada después de la explosión no fluyó de la chimenea de Papenkaule, sino que apareció al oeste de ella en Hagelskaule y fluyó hacia el sur como el flujo de lava de Sarresdorf hasta el valle de Kyll. Dado que el dolomita en el subsuelo de Papenkaule es permeable al agua, no se formó un lago de cráter.
