Bugarach atrajo la atención a finales de 2012. Esto se debió a la predicción de que el pequeño pueblo sería salvado durante el anunciado fin del mundo el 21 de diciembre de 2012 (el final del calendario maya). Los "creyentes" pensaban que el 21 de diciembre la montaña Pic de Bugarach se abriría y de allí saldrían ovnis para salvar a la humanidad alrededor del pueblo.
