Hulst se perfila como la "ciudad más flamenca" de Zelanda. Especialmente el estilo de vida borgoñón de la ciudad de Hulst atrae a muchos turistas belgas. Hulst formó parte del Condado de Flandes junto con el resto de Zelanda Oriental hasta 1648 (Paz de Münster) y era una ciudad hija de Gante. Hulst se enorgullece de ser mencionada en el medieval Van den vos Reynaerde. Este hecho se menciona con una estatua de Reintje. Hulst es miembro de la Asociación de Ciudades Fortificadas de los Países Bajos.
