L'église pittoresque de Saint Jean à Eremo date de 1682 et est dédiée à Saint Jean-Baptiste. Il y avait déjà une église ici en 984, mais elle a été détruite lors de l'inondation de Sainte Élisabeth en 1377. La promenade extérieure en sept stations illustre la vie de Jean-Baptiste. Des prières étaient offertes contre des maladies telles que les convulsions, les 'seskens' et la maladie des chutes. En face de l'église se trouve 'Pinte ende Sproete', deux filles du coq Cantecleer de l'histoire de Reynaert. Une impression de Reynaert est imprimée dans la colonne. À l'origine, cette ville s'appelait Sint-Jansdorp, plus tard le terme 'in eremo' a été ajouté, latin pour 'dans le désert'.
