La route romaine "Via Militaris" a été construite au 1er siècle de notre ère et traversait la ville. En mai 2010, des restes bien conservés de la route ont été excavés lors des travaux sur le Corridor 10. Une base militaire ottomane a fonctionné à l'ouest de Dimitrovgrad avant l'indépendance totale des nations balkaniques.
