Durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale, la zona attorno a Kampenhout-Sas fu teatro di violenti combattimenti tra l'esercito tedesco invasore e le forze belghe nel mese di agosto del 1914. I tedeschi riuscirono a riorganizzarsi vicino al sas, ripristinarono il ponte distrutto e il 9 settembre 1914 attraversarono il canale per respingere i belgi attraverso Keerbergen, Putte verso Lier. Tutte le case nei dintorni di Kampenhout-Sas furono distrutte e il villaggio di Relst fu completamente cancellato dalla mappa.
