Semur-en-Auxois ha un nucleo medievale. La città è costruita su un blocco di granito rosa, circondata dal fiume Armançon. Il fiume è stato ampiamente utilizzato dalle concerie e azionava molti mulini. Ora il flusso è notevolmente diminuito a causa di una diga che forma il Lago di Pont. Questa è stata costruita nel XIX secolo per fornire acqua al Canale di Borgogna.
