Bugarach è diventato molto noto alla fine del 2012. E questo a causa della previsione che il paesino sarebbe stato risparmiato durante la prevista fine del mondo il 21 dicembre 2012 (la fine del calendario Maya). I "credenti" credevano che il 21 dicembre la montagna Pic de Bugarach si sarebbe aperta e da lì sarebbero usciti degli UFO per salvare l'umanità intorno al villaggio.
