'Lui (Papa Urbano II) si recò a Clermont per pregare nella cripta della Basilica di Notre-Dame-du-Port e lanciò il giorno seguente la guerra santa nel suo famoso appello per la prima crociata, in un luogo nei campi vicino alla città, il 27 novembre 1095.' Si dice che avesse concluso il suo discorso con le amare parole: "Deus lo Volt! (Dio lo vuole!)". Questa espressione divenne così il grido di battaglia dei crociati.
