Nel Castello di Doorwerth era ospitato, prima della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, il Museo dell'Esercito Olandese, ma quella collezione è stata trasferita a Leida nel 1944. Durante la Battaglia di Arnhem, il castello fu occupato dai tedeschi e fu in gran parte distrutto durante l'inverno del '44/'45 a causa dei bombardamenti degli Alleati, ma infine fatto saltare in aria dai tedeschi.
Gli alleati venivano riforniti tramite lanci di paracadute, ma a volte questi cadevano nelle mani tedesche. (vedi foto)
Nel 1949, dopo l'inizio della restaurazione, fu fondato il Museo Airborne, che nel 1978 si trasferì nell'attuale sede dell'ex Hotel Hartenstein.
