Op de grens tussen Tielt en Dentergem ligt een nieuwe toeristisch-recreatieve kern op en rond de Poelberg. De Meikensbossen vind je aan de voet van de heuvel en is ongeveer 63 hectare groot.

Op de Ferrariskaarten kan men zien dat de omgeving van het huidige Meikensbos 200 jaar geleden nog een bosrijke omgeving was, het zogenaamde Dendrombosch. In de 19de eeuw raakten die bossen versnipperd. Door de gestage kap voor brandhout tijdens de twee wereldoorlogen en de ontginningen ten voordele van landbouwgronden daarna slonk het bosgebied tot een schamele 5 hectare.
