Keizer Karel deed op 56 jarige leeftijd afstand van zijn troon. Drie dagen nadat hij in 1556 afstand had gedaan van zijn troon, vertrok hij uit Vlaanderen naar Yuste, in de Spaanse Estramadura. Daar had hij naast het Monasterio de San Jeronimo een klein paleis laten optrekken om er de rest van zijn dagen door te brengen. Voor die laatste reis scheepte hij in te Vlissingen. Na dertien dagen bereikte hij de Asturische kust.
