Mierlo was vanaf 1100 een heerlijkheid waar de heren van Mierlo al kersen kweekten, zoals de Romeinen dat voor hen deden. De humusrijke doorlatende zandgrond in Mierlo is hiervoor heel geschikt. De pomoloog Rietsema heeft in 1928 de MIERLOSE ZWARTE KERS beschreven als een aparte soort. Vanaf 1948 tot 1970 werden hier in Mierlo kersenoogstfeesten gehouden met een jaarlijkse "Kersenkoningin". Tijdens deze feesten trok het dorp 60.000 bezoekers per jaar. De laatste jaren zijn de plaatselijke IVN afdeling en de gemeente bezig de kersenboom weer terug te brengen in het straatbeeld. De oude, maar ook de nieuwe boomgaarden zijn tijdens de bloei een pracht om te zien.
