Die Normandwijk war zu Beginn der dreißiger Jahre (siehe Foto) eine neue, eindeutig touristisch orientierte Baufläche, u.a. beworben von dem damaligen Stararchitekten Vereecke, der ein Ausläufer des Deichviertels werden sollte. Man nahm den normannischen Baustil als Vorbild, um ein Viertel mit freistehenden Villen im Grünen zu schaffen. Es ist eigentlich eine spätere Anwendung des Gartenstadtgedankens, der bereits früher in Westende-Bad angewendet wurde. Es war damals auch eine klare Reaktion auf den urbaneren Charakter der Gebäude an der Seestraße.
