Originalmente, el lago Offlumer fue utilizado como una zona de extracción de arena y grava durante décadas. Luego, se fue entregando gradualmente al público. Hoy en día, el lago, desde su remodelación en el marco de la Región en 2004, ofrece un ambiente exclusivo y, a la vez, cercano a la naturaleza a la sombra de antiguas ruinas industriales.
Con su paseo marítimo y una amplia playa, es el destino perfecto para turistas de toda NRW, así como para habitantes de Neuenkirchen y sus alrededores. Desde la playa o las terrazas del Café del lago se puede contemplar casi todo el lago. Desde aquí también se puede divagar hacia la lejanía, hacia las extensiones del Münsterland por campos y caminos.
