Houthalen-Oost is a garden neighborhood of Houthalen in the Belgian municipality of Houthalen-Helchteren, which is not directly built into the center of Houthalen but rather connected to the Genk neighborhood of Zwartberg. Until 1960, it was even impossible to reach the center of Houthalen directly from Houthalen-Oost.
Houthalen-Oost is enclosed on the west side by the nature reserves of Kelchterhoef and Tenhaagdoornheide and to the south by the nature and recreation area of Hengelhoef. On the northern side, one can find the shooting range on the Donderslagse Heide. The Masy Domain is also located there.
