Each year on May 1, a peculiar phenomenon takes place in some villages here on Naxos. You will see the village donkeys standing on top of the flat roofs. Being on the roof they can not work for their owners. They people who wanted a work-free May 1st are behind this tradition. This group could not convince the rest of the islanders to strike on May 1, the day of labor. That's why they took the action to pull the dunkeys up the roof during the night before May 1st. Because donkeys were thé worktool on the island, people were forced to be on strike. Of course, this dependency on donkeys to work doesn't exist anymore, but the tradion of lifting donkeys on rooftops remained.
