La porta va ser construïda al voltant de 1300 com a part de la muralla de la ciutat i servia tant per a defensa com per a cobrar peatges.
El nom fa referència al proper poble de Graach , al qual donava accés la porta. Originalment, la porta tenia un terra amb espitlleres , sales d'espera per als soldats i possiblement un rasclet o pont llevadís de fusta.
En 1689 , la porta va ser parcialment destruïda per les tropes franceses sota el regnat de Luis XIV. En 1714 , va ser reconstruïda i se li va assignar una nova funció: presó. Posteriorment, es va utilitzar com a refugi per a persones sense llar.
El 1985 la porta es va transformar en un museu d'història local.
