Antigament coneguda com a Place du Marché el 1829, més tard Place Neuve , finalment va rebre el seu nom actual al segle XIX, inspirat en l'antiga paraula dialectal erb (verdures/herbes).
Aquesta petita plaça, situada entre el carrer Saint-Michel i el carrer des Marins, era antany la plaça del poble on es comerciaven verdures i herbes.
Els frondosos plàtans , una petita font anomenada fontaine de la Mentonnaise al centre, envoltada de bancs de pedra i vorejada d'acollidores terrasses de cafès i restaurants , fan que aquest lloc respiri l'ambient mediterrani.
