El dic de Westkapelle a Walcheren va ser el primer a rebre un nou tipus de reforç de dic : espigons amb piles a banda i banda.
L'any 1540 l'emperador Carles V va venir a veure especialment les obres espectaculars.
Un espigós de pedra amb piles s'anomena cap de pila . Els pals, fets de roure europeu, tenen una llargada de 3,5 a 4,5 metres i un diàmetre de 20 cm.
Zelanda té uns dos-cents caps de pila. Quaranta d'aquests es troben a la costa de Zeeuws-Vlaanderen de 12 km de llarg. Són patrimoni cultural.
