El dique marítimo de Westkapelle en Walcheren fue el primero en recibir un nuevo tipo de refuerzo de dique : rompeolas con pilotes en ambos lados.
En 1540 el emperador Carlos V vino a ver especialmente las espectaculares obras.
Un rompeolas de piedra con pilotes se llama cabeza de pilote . Los postes, de roble europeo, tienen una longitud de 3,5 a 4,5 metros y un diámetro de 20 cm.
Zelanda tiene alrededor de doscientas cabezas de pila. Cuarenta de estos se encuentran en la costa de Zeeuws-Vlaanderen de 12 km de largo. Son patrimonio cultural.
