La diga marina di Westkapelle su Walcheren è stata la prima a ricevere un nuovo tipo di rinforzo della diga : frangiflutti con pali su entrambi i lati.
Nel 1540 venne soprattutto l'imperatore Carlo V a vedere le opere spettacolari.
Un frangiflutti in pietra con pali è chiamato testa di palo . I pali, realizzati in rovere europeo, sono lunghi da 3,5 a 4,5 metri e hanno un diametro di 20 cm.
La Zelanda ha circa duecento teste di palo. Quaranta di questi si trovano sulla costa Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, lunga 12 km. Sono patrimonio culturale.
