Der Seedeich Westkapelle auf Walcheren war der erste, der eine neue Art der Deichbefestigung erhielt : Wellenbrecher mit Pfählen auf beiden Seiten.
Im Jahr 1540 kam vor allem Kaiser Karl V., um die spektakulären Werke zu besichtigen.
Als Pfahlkopf wird ein steinerner Wellenbrecher mit Pfählen bezeichnet. Die Pfosten aus europäischer Eiche sind 3,5 bis 4,5 Meter lang und haben einen Durchmesser von 20 cm.
In Zeeland gibt es etwa zweihundert Pfahlköpfe. Vierzig davon befinden sich an der 12 km langen Küste Zeeuws-Vlaanderens. Sie sind kulturelles Erbe.
