Stationet blev bygget i 1837 af Statsbanerne. Kort efter uafhængigheden besluttede Belgien under indflydelse af kong Leopold I at anlægge jernbanelinjer som den første stat. Melle lå langs den tredje anlagte hovedlinje: Mechelen-Gent (efter Bruxelles og Antwerpen), hvilket også gjorde det til den ældste jernbanestation i Belgien og dermed også den ældste murstensstation i verden. De fleste stationer blev dog dengang bygget i træ, da dette var billigere.
