The station was built in 1837 by the State Railways. Shortly after independence, Belgium, under the impetus of King Leopold I, decided to be the first state to build railway lines. Melle was located along the third main line: Mechelen-Ghent (after Brussels and Antwerp), making it also the oldest railway station in Belgium and by extension also the oldest brick station in the world. However, most stations were built in wood at the time because it was cheaper.
