La estación fue construida en 1837 por los Ferrocarriles Estatales. Poco después de la independencia, Bélgica, bajo el impulso del rey Leopoldo I, decidió ser el primer estado en construir líneas de tren. Melle se encontraba a lo largo de la tercera línea principal construida: Malinas-Gante (después de Bruselas y Amberes), lo que le dio el título de la estación de tren más antigua de Bélgica y, por extensión, la estación de ladrillo más antigua del mundo. Sin embargo, la mayoría de las estaciones se construyeron en madera en ese momento porque era más barato.
