La stazione fu costruita nel 1837 dalle Ferrovie statali. Poco dopo l'indipendenza, il Belgio, sotto l'impulso del re Leopoldo I, decise di essere il primo Stato a costruire linee ferroviarie. Melle si trovava lungo la terza linea principale costruita: Mechelen-Gent (dopo Bruxelles e Anversa), rendendola così anche la stazione ferroviaria più antica del Belgio e, di conseguenza, la più antica stazione in mattoni del mondo. Tuttavia, la maggior parte delle stazioni venne costruita in legno all'epoca perché era più economico.
