Krigsmindesmærket minder om et krigsdrama. I natten fra den 21. til 22. juni 1944 - lige før midnat på årets længste dag - lettede flere RAF-skvadroner jagere og bombefly fra forskellige lufthavne i England med destination Wesseling nær Köln. Mål: Bombardement af tyske fabrikker og anlæg for syntetisk brændstof. Også Lancaster 1C-ME846, med en besætning på syv, deltog i dette.
