Bompiperen er en ukendt fugl, der i udseende ikke adskiller sig meget fra andre pipere som græspiperen, men er lidt mere kraftigt stribet. Fuglen genkendes dog bedst på sangen, som fremføres fra en høj position eller under en sangflugt. Sangen består af en høj rystelse og slutter med tsia, tsia, tsia.
Bompipere findes i modsætning til græspipere især i områder med træer. Sangflugten begynder og slutter som regel også i et træ i stedet for på jorden. Ligesom andre pipere bygger bompiperen redet godt gemt på jorden.
