De boompieper is een onopvallende vogel die qua uiterlijk weinig verschilt van andere piepers zoals de graspieper, maar is iets krachtiger gestreept. De vogel is echter het best te herkennen aan de zang, die wordt voorgedragen vanaf een hoge positie of tijdens een zangvlucht. De zang bestaat uit een luide trilling en eindigt met tsia, tsia, tsia.
Boompiepers komen in tegenstelling tot graspiepers vooral voor in gebieden met bomen. De zangvlucht begint en eindigt doorgaans ook in een boom in plaats van op de grond. Net als andere piepers bouwt ook de boompieper het nest goed verstopt op de grond.
