Le pipit des arbres est un oiseau discret dont l'apparence diffère peu de celle d'autres pipits comme le pipit des prés, mais il est légèrement plus strié. Cependant, l'oiseau est le mieux reconnu par son chant, qui est prononcé depuis une position élevée ou pendant un vol chantant. Le chant se compose d'une vibration forte et se termine par tsia, tsia, tsia.
Contrairement aux pipits des prés, les pipits des arbres se trouvent principalement dans des zones boisées. Le vol chantant commence et se termine généralement aussi dans un arbre plutôt que sur le sol. Comme d'autres pipits, le pipit des arbres construit également son nid bien caché au sol.
