Putberg ligger vest for Asse, som har en rig historie som knudepunkt for romerske trafikveje, herunder hovedvejen til Bavay. I landskabet findes der stadig mange fortidsminder og forsvarsstrukturer. I den lille landsby Kalkoven blev resterne af en romersk kalkovn og en vicus fundet. Asse har i mere end 200 år været et knudepunkt for vigtige veje til Aalst, Gent, Dendermonde, Merchtem-Mechelen, Vilvoorde, Bruxelles og Edingen. Landskabets struktur har siden slutningen af det 18. århundrede ændret sig lidt.
