Putberg si trova a ovest di Asse, che ha un ricco passato come nodo di strade romane, tra cui la via verso Bavay. Nel paesaggio si possono ainda trovare numerose scavi e strutture difensive. Nella frazione di Kalkoven sono stati rinvenuti i resti di un forno di calce romano e di un vicus. Asse è da oltre 200 anni un nodo di importanti strade verso Aalst, Gand, Dendermonde, Merchtem-Mechelen, Vilvoorde, Bruxelles e Edingen. La struttura del paesaggio è cambiata poco dalla fine del 18° secolo.
