Putberg est situé à l'ouest d'Asse, qui a un passé riche en tant que carrefour des voies romaines, y compris la voie romaine vers Bavay. Dans le paysage, on trouve encore de nombreuses fouilles et structures défensives. Dans le hameau de Kalkoven, les restes d'un four à chaux romain et d'un vicus ont été découverts. Asse est depuis plus de 200 ans un carrefour de routes importantes vers Aalst, Gand, Dendermonde, Merchtem-Mechelen, Vilvorde, Bruxelles et Enghien. La structure du paysage a peu changé depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle.
