Putberg liegt westlich von Asse, das eine reiche Vergangenheit als Knotenpunkt römischer Verkehrswege hat, einschließlich der Heerstraße nach Bavay. In der Landschaft sind noch zahlreiche Gräber und Verteidigungsanlagen zu finden. Im Weiler Kalkoven wurden die Überreste eines römischen Kalkofens und eines Vicus gefunden. Asse ist seit über 200 Jahren ein Knotenpunkt wichtiger Straßen nach Aalst, Gent, Dendermonde, Merchtem-Mechelen, Vilvoorde, Brüssel und Edingen. Die Struktur der Landschaft hat sich seit Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts wenig verändert.
