Putberg se encuentra al oeste de Asse, que tiene un rico pasado como un nudo de carreteras romanas, incluida la vía hacia Bavay. En el paisaje todavía se pueden encontrar numerosas excavaciones y estructuras defensivas. En la aldea de Kalkoven se encontraron los restos de un horno de cal romano y un vicus. Asse ha sido durante más de 200 años un nudo de importantes carreteras hacia Aalst, Gante, Dendermonde, Merchtem-Mechelen, Vilvoorde, Bruselas y Edingen. La estructura del paisaje ha cambiado poco desde finales del siglo XVIII.
