Putberg ligt ten westen van Asse, dat een rijk verleden heeft als knooppunt van Romeinse verkeerswegen, waaronder de heerbaan naar Bavay. In het landschap zijn nog talrijke vergravingen en verdedigingsstructuren terug te vinden. In het gehucht Kalkoven werden de resten van een Romeinse kalkoven en een vicus teruggevonden. Asse is al sinds meer dan 200 jaar een knooppunt van belangrijke wegen naar Aalst, Gent, Dendermonde, Merchtem-Mechelen, Vilvoorde, Brussel en Edingen. De structuur van het landschap is sinds het einde van de 18de eeuw weinig gewijzigd.
