Source: Escaut sans Frontières - Grenzeloze Schelde
Kanalet Charleroi-Bruxelles blev taget i brug i 1832 for at transportere kul fra kulbassinet i Hainaut mod Bruxelles og Antwerpen. Oprindeligt beregnet til indenrigsfartøjer, der kunne transportere 70 tons gods, blev det flere gange udvidet og udgravet. I dag kan der sejle både med op til 1.350 tons materiale. Her ser vi især indenrigsfartøjer lastet med sand, grus, metal, olieprodukter og endda korn. Opstrøms slusen, på højre bred, kan sandet fra bådene losses via en kaj til forsyning af en nærliggende fabrik, hvor beton produceres.
Et par kilometer nedstrøms, i Bruxelles by, tæt på Jernpladsen, tilsluttes kanalet søkanalen fra Bruxelles til Escaut (tidligere kaldet 'kanal von Willebroeck'). Sammen, fra Sambre til Escaut, strækker disse to kanaler sig over en længde på 102 kilometer, primært i Zenne-dalen.
