Skarven er tydeligt til stede i kanalen. Denne store fugl (77 til 94 cm) med sin overvejende sorte fjerdragt og kraftige næb forsvinder regelmæssigt under vandet for at finde fisk at ernære sig med. Hver dag spiser skarven sin egen vægt i fisk. For at komme hurtigt frem har denne vandfugl fantastiske svømmehud. Når han kommer op af vandet for at hvile sig på jorden eller på en gren, spreder han sine vinger og hale for at lade sin fjerdragt tørre. I modsætning til andre fugles er den nemlig ikke vandafvisende.
