Le Grand cormoran est bien présent sur les eaux du canal. Ce grand oiseau (77 à 94cm) au plumage dominé par le noir et au bec puissant disparaît régulièrement sous la surface de l’eau afin d’y rechercher du poisson pour se nourrir. Pour progresser rapidement cet oiseau aquatique, qui ingurgite chaque jour l’équivalent de son poids en poissons, dispose de belles pattes palmées. Une fois sorti de l'eau, perché ou au sol, ailes et queue déployées, il sèche son plumage qui à la différence d’autres oiseaux n’est pas imperméable
