På engen til venstre for Kwachtløbet skjulte beboerne fra landsbyerne Heikant og Gebergte sig for gennemtrængende soldater i det 17. og 18. århundrede. I denne periode blev der næsten konstant ført krig. Hjelpeløse landsbyboere trak sig tilbage til lavtliggende områder omgivet af vand. Skansen var ikke sjældent beskyttet af en hævebro. Meerhout havde i løbet af denne urolige periode ikke færre end 8 skanser. Heikantskansen var på grund af sin beliggenhed i sumpet område meget effektiv. Den første beskrivelse stammer fra 1683.
