I 1820 blev Charles X's anden søn, hertugen af Berry, myrdet af L.P. Louvel, en bonapartist, der ønskede at sætte en stopper for Bourbon-slægten. Hertugen af Berry dør uden børn, men en posthum søn, hertugen af Bordeaux, fødes den 29. september samme år, på Sankt Michaels dag. Et år senere blev denne statue indviet, bestilt af vicomte Elie de Pons Saint-Maurice, godsherre af Grignols, til ære for dette barn. Henri V de Bourbon, hertug af Bordeaux og greve af Chambord, er den legitime arving til tronen i Frankrig.
