En 1820, le second fils de Charles X, le duc de Berry, est assassiné par L.P. Louvel, bonapartiste qui veut mettre fin à la race des Bourbon. Le duc de Berry meurt sans enfant, mais un fils posthume, le duc de Bordeaux, naît le 29 septembre de la même année, jour de la Saint Michel. Un an plus tard est inaugurée cette statue commandée par le vicomte Elie de Pons Saint-Maurice, châtelain de Grignols, en l'honneur de cet enfant. Henri V de Bourbon, duc de Bordeaux et comte de Chambord, est le prétendant légitime au trône de France.
