Gaden er opkaldt efter St. Thomas' kirke, grundlagt i 1175 nær St. Catherine's kirke. Grundlæggeren var William FitzAldelm, stedfortræder og slægtning til kong Henry II. Kirken blev helliget Thomas Becket, som for nylig var blevet myrdet i sin katedral i Canterbury af kongens tilhængere. Kirken blev et rigt og magtfuldt kloster, som kontrollerede Thomas Court og Donore. I 1539 blev den opløst sammen med alle klostre af Henry VIII. I de følgende 150 år overgik kirkerne i nabolaget til den reformerede kirke, mens romersk-katolske præster førte et usikkert liv med at tage sig af den større del af befolkningen, som forblev tro mod den gamle religion.
