Hospitalet har sin oprindelse i Cork Union Workhouse og Infirmary, som blev designet af George Wilkinson og færdiggjort i 1841. En stor tre etagers bygning blev tilføjet nord for stedet. Faciliteterne blev til Cork District Hospital i 1898 og senere til Cork County Home and Hospital. Det blev i 1923 udpeget ved ministerielt dekret som ansvarligt for behandling af medicinske, kirurgiske og fødselsrelaterede tilfælde samt tilfælde af smitsomme og smitsomme sygdomme.
