El hospital tiene sus orígenes en la Casa de Trabajo y Hospital de Enfermos de Cork, que fue diseñado por George Wilkinson y completado en 1841. Se añadió un gran bloque de tres pisos al norte del sitio. La instalación se convirtió en el Hospital del Distrito de Cork en 1898 y luego pasó a ser el Hogar y Hospital del Condado de Cork. Fue designado por orden ministerial como responsable del tratamiento de casos médicos, quirúrgicos y de maternidad, así como de casos de enfermedades infecciosas y contagiosas en 1923.
